Faz hoje anos que nascia, em 1911, Norman Heatley. Este bioquímico inglês resolveu os problemas na extracção da penicilina do seu molde, e abriu o caminho para a sua produção em massa. No Dia D da Segunda Guerra Mundial, os Aliados tinham um stock adequado para tratar os feridos em perigo de infecções bacterianas graves. Embora tenha sido Fleming quem acidentalmente descobriu a penicilina (1928), foi Heatley quem a tornou prática, fazendo quantidades suficientes em 1941 para os seus primeiros testes clínicos. Seu aparato incluía "bacias" de porcelana, batedeiras de leite e bandejas de assar para cultivar as bactérias. Além disso, um método de ensaio que ele desenvolveu poderia medir com precisão a actividade de uma amostra de penicilina, no que ficou conhecido como "unidades de Oxford". O seu método de produção usava pratos de tortas, latas de biscoitos e um recipiente de porcelana apelidado de comadre.
Faz também hoje anos que nascia, em 1936, Robert Woodrow Wilson. Este rádio-astrónomo norte-americano partilhou com seu colega de trabalho Arno Penzias o Prémio Nobel de Física de 1978 pela descoberta da radiação cósmica de fundo em micro-ondas usando uma antena de chifre de micro-ondas nos Laboratórios Bell, Holmdel, Nova Jersey. A sua descoberta em 1964 é agora amplamente interpretada como sendo a radiação remanescente do modelo “Big Bang” para a criação do universo há vários biliões de anos atrás. Wilson continuou o seu trabalho de astrofísica com Penzias, procurando por moléculas interestelares e determinando a abundância relativa de isótopos interestelares.
Por fim, faz anos hoje que nascia, em 1938, Donald Knuth. Este matemático e cientista da computação ficou conhecido por ter criado o sistema de composição de texto TeX, da linguagem de definição de fontes METAFONT relacionada e do sistema de renderização, e da família de fontes modernas Computer Modern. É também conhecido por ter criado a "bíblia" dos programadores - o TAOCP - The Art of Computer Programming. Na década de 1970, Knuth descreveu a ciência da computação como "um campo totalmente novo, sem identidade real. E o padrão de publicações disponíveis não era assim tão alto. Muitos dos trabalhos publicados estavam simplesmente errados ... Então, uma das minhas motivações foi para endireitar uma história que foi muito mal contada. ". Em 2011, os três primeiros volumes e a primeira parte do volume quatro de sua série foram publicados.
Nesta semana que passou está a decorrer a CES 2019. Esta feira que decorre entre os dias 8 e 11 de Janeiro em Las Vegas e tem cerca de 4500 expositores é marcada habitualmente por lançamento de produtos por parte dos fabricantes de tecnologia e este ano não foi excepção. Uma das noticias que destaco é a apresentação por parte da Hyundai do seu veiculo prototipo de resposta a catástrofes naturais. O conceito Elevate é baseado numa plataforma EV modular com a capacidade de alternar diferentes corpos para situações específicas. A arquitectura da perna robótica tem cinco graus de liberdade, além de motores de propulsão e é habilitada pelo mais recente em tecnologia de actuadores eléctricos. Este projecto é exclusivamente capaz de andar com os passos dos mamíferos e repteis, permitindo que ele se mova em qualquer direcção. Outra noticia desta semana, também vinda da CES 2019 é a apresentação por parte da IBM do primeiro sistema de computação quântica integrado para uso comercial. O IBM Q System One foi projectado para lidar um dia com problemas que actualmente são considerados de natureza muito complexa e exponencial para os sistemas clássicos. Aplicações futuras da computação quântica podem incluir encontrar novas maneiras de modelar dados financeiros e isolar os principais factores de risco globais para fazer melhores investimentos, ou encontrar o melhor caminho entre os sistemas globais para logística ultra-eficiente e optimizar as operações de frota para entregas.

"Using data from NASA's Kepler space telescope, citizen scientists have discovered a planet roughly twice the size of Earth located within its star's habitable zone, the range of orbital distances where liquid water may exist on the planet's surface. The new world, known as K2-288Bb, could be rocky or could be a gas-rich planet similar to Neptune. Its size is rare among exoplanets - planets beyond our solar system. "It's a very exciting discovery due to how it was found, its temperate orbit and because planets of this size seem to be relatively uncommon," said Adina Feinstein, a University of Chicago graduate student who discussed the discovery on Monday, Jan. 7, at the 233rd meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Seattle. She is also the lead author of a paper describing the new planet accepted for publication by The Astronomical Journal. Located 226 light-years away in the constellation Taurus, the planet lies in a stellar system known as K2-288, which contains a pair of dim, cool M-type stars separated by about 5.1 billion miles (8.2 billion kilometers) - roughly six times the distance between Saturn and the Sun." "Bell Helicopter, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, revealed the configuration and full-scale vertical-takeoff-and-landing (VTOL) air taxi vehicle today during CES 2019. The air taxi, named Bell Nexus, is powered by a hybrid-electric propulsion system and features Bell’s signature powered lift concept incorporating six tilting ducted fans that are designed to safely and efficiently redefine air travel. "NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has found three confirmed exoplanets, or worlds beyond our solar system, in its first three months of observations. The mission’s sensitive cameras also captured 100 short-lived changes — most of them likely stellar outbursts — in the same region of the sky. They include six supernova explosions whose brightening light was recorded by TESS even before the outbursts were discovered by ground-based telescopes. The new discoveries show that TESS is delivering on its goal of discovering planets around nearby bright stars. Using ground-based telescopes, astronomers are now conducting follow-up observations on more than 280 TESS exoplanet candidates. The first confirmed discovery is a world called Pi Mensae c about twice Earth’s size." [...]

"NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang, Mercedes’ Sajjad Khan unveil vision for software-defined AI cars integrating self-driving, intelligent cockpits. Mercedes-Benz announced today it has selected NVIDIA to help realize its vision for next-generation vehicles. Speaking to a packed crowd at the Mercedes-Benz booth on the first day of CES 2019, Mercedes-Benz Executive Vice President Sajjad Khan and NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang outlined their plans for next-gen AI cars and the new breed of mobility solutions they’ll enable. “We’re announcing a new partnership going forward, creating a computer that defines the future of autonomous vehicles, the future of AI and the future of mobility,” Huang said. He described a single system providing self-driving capabilities and smart-cockpit functions that replaces dozens of smaller processors inside current cars. Both companies, he said, agree that the car of the future must be software defined — starting from creating the software for today’s requirements, anticipating software for tomorrow’s needs and building the computing architecture to enable it." "An international team of scientists, led by King's College London, have developed a thermogalvanic brick that generates electricity as long as the two faces of the brick are at different temperatures. This is due to balanced ‘electrochemical’ reduction and oxidation processes occurring inside the brick at the two faces. As long as electrodes at these faces are at different temperatures, the electrochemical reactions occur and electricity is generated. The compounds inside are not consumed, do not run out and can never be overcharged. As long as there is a temperature difference there can be electricity. For example, if a house or shelter’s outside wall is sunny and hot, but the interior shaded and cool, electricity can be produced by the wall." [...]
"These stretchable, inexpensive, tattoo-like circuits are made with an inkjet printer. Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University’s College of Engineering and the Institute of Systems and Robotics of the University of Coimbra, Portugal have developed a simple, efficient method to make robust, highly flexible, tattoo-like circuits for use in wearable computing. The low-cost process adds trace amounts of an electrically-conductive, liquid metal alloy to tattoo paper that adheres to human skin. These ultrathin tattoos can be applied easily with water, the same way one would apply a child’s decorative tattoo with a damp sponge. Other tattoo-like electronics either require complex fabrication techniques inside a cleanroom or lack the material performance required for stretchable digital circuit functionality on skin. Carmel Majidi, an associate professor of mechanical engineering and the director of the Soft Machines Lab at Carnegie Mellon, and Mahmoud Tavakoli, the director of the Soft and Printed Microelectronics Laboratory at the University of Coimbra, teamed up to develop methods for direct printing of stretchable electronic circuits." "Plants convert sunlight into energy through photosynthesis; however, most crops on the planet are plagued by a photosynthetic glitch, and to deal with it, evolved an energy-expensive process called photorespiration that drastically suppresses their yield potential. Today, researchers from the University of Illinois and U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service report in the journal Science that crops engineered with a photorespiratory shortcut are 40 percent more productive in real-world agronomic conditions. “We could feed up to 200 million additional people with the calories lost to photorespiration in the Midwestern U.S. each year,” said principal investigator Donald Ort (GEGC leader/BSD/CABBI), Robert Emerson Professor of Plant Science and Crop Sciences. “Reclaiming even a portion of these calories across the world would go a long way to meeting the 21st Century’s rapidly expanding food demands—driven by population growth and more affluent high-calorie diets.” This landmark study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that is engineering crops to photosynthesize more efficiently to sustainably increase worldwide food productivity with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR), and the U.K. Government’s Department for International Development (DFID). Photosynthesis uses the enzyme Rubisco—the planet’s most abundant protein—and sunlight energy to turn carbon dioxide and water into sugars that fuel plant growth and yield. Over millennia, Rubisco has become a victim of its own success, creating an oxygen-rich atmosphere." [...]
"UNSW scientists have shown that their pioneering single atom technology can be adapted to building 3D silicon quantum chips – with precise interlayer alignment and highly accurate measurement of spin states. The 3D architecture is considered a major step in the development of a blueprint to build a large-scale quantum computer. UNSW researchers at the Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology (CQC2T) have shown for the first time that they can build atomic precision qubits in a 3D device – another major step towards a universal quantum computer. The researchers, led by 2018 Australian of the Year and Director of CQC2T Professor Michelle Simmons, have demonstrated that they can extend their atomic qubit fabrication technique to multiple layers of a silicon crystal – achieving a critical component of the 3D chip architecture that they introduced to the world in 2015. This new research is published today in Nature Nanotechnology. The group is the first to demonstrate the feasibility of an architecture that uses atomic-scale qubits aligned to control lines – which are essentially very narrow wires – inside a 3D design." [...]
"Nanocubes with hollow interiors and surface openings whose shape, size, and location are precisely controlled could be used to load and unload materials for biomedical, catalysis, and optical sensing applications This holiday season, scientists at the Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN)—a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science User Facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory—have wrapped a box of a different kind. Using a one-step chemical synthesis method, they engineered hollow metallic nanosized boxes with cube-shaped pores at the corners and demonstrated how these “nanowrappers” can be used to carry and release DNA-coated nanoparticles in a controlled way. The research is reported in a paper published on Dec. 12 in ACS Central Science, a journal of the American Chemical Society (ACS). “Imagine you have a box but you can only use the outside and not the inside,” said co-author Oleg Gang, leader of the CFN Soft and Bio Nanomaterials Group. “This is how we’ve been dealing with nanoparticles. Most nanoparticle assembly or synthesis methods produce solid nanostructures." [...]
"Vibrating carbon monoxide molecules adsorbed at the surface of a salt crystal stop moving after a few milliseconds. Scientists now discovered this is dominantly due to the emission of electromagnetic waves. The role of the chemical bond at the surface thereby appears to be less important than previously thought. Jörg Meyer from the Leiden Institute for Chemistry has contributed to the fundamental research that appeared in Science on 14 December. Slowing down When carbon monoxide (CO) molecules attach to the surface of a NaCl salt crystal, the so called chemical bond between different atoms and molecules is considered to be very important. Not only to hold molecules at a stable position at the surface, but also for the transfer of vibrational energy." [...]
"Test accelerator under construction at Cornell will reuse energy, running beams through multi-pass magnets that help keep size and costs down. When it comes to particle accelerators, magnets are one key to success. Powerful magnetic fields keep particle beams “on track” as they’re ramped up to higher energy, crashed into collisions for physics experiments, or delivered to patients to zap tumors. Innovative magnets have the potential to improve all these applications. That’s one aim of the Cornell-Brookhaven “Energy-Recovery Linac” Test Accelerator, or CBETA, under construction at Cornell University and funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). CBETA relies on a beamline made of cutting-edge magnets designed by physicists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory that can carry four beams at very different energies at the same time." "Researchers from the University of Tokyo developed a new system to charge electronic devices such as smartphones and smartwatches wirelessly. The method involves a cuttable, flexible power transfer sheet which charges devices wirelessly and can be molded or even cut with scissors to fit different-shaped surfaces and objects. “I really wish to live in a wireless world,” says Ryo Takahashi of the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology. “Imagine homes and offices without tangled cables, and think how useful it could be for emerging fields like robotics.” Takahashi is a master’s student whose previous study of robotics inspired him to pioneer ways to power devices such as robots or smartphones simply and easily. This path led him towards the creation of the first-ever cuttable wireless power transfer sheet. It might seem strange to invent something just so it can be cut to pieces, but the idea is users can reshape the sheet to fit whatever surface upon which they wish to charge devices." [...]
"The upgrade of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory will make it between 100 and 1,000 times brighter than it is today. “That factor is such a big change, it’s going to revolutionize the types of science that we can do,” said Stephen Streiffer, Argonne Associate Laboratory Director for Photon Sciences and Director of the APS. “We’ll be able to look at the structure of materials and chemical systems in the interior of things — inside a turbine blade or a catalytic reactor — almost down to the atomic scale. We haven’t been able to do that before. Given that vast change, we can only dream about the science we’re going to do.” In December, DOE approved the technical scope, cost estimate and plan of work for an upgrade of APS. "What is Living IoT? Sensor networks with devices capable of moving could enable applications ranging from precision irrigation to environmental sensing. Using mechanical drones to move sensors, however, severely limits operation time since flight time is limited by the energy density of current battery technology. We explore an alternative, biology-based solution: integrate sensing, computing and communication functionalities onto live flying insects to create a mobile IoT platform. Such an approach takes advantage of these tiny, highly efficient biological insects which are ubiquitous in many outdoor ecosystems, to essentially provide mobility for free. Doing so however requires addressing key technical challenges of power, size, weight and self-localization in order for the insects to perform location-dependent sensing operations as they carry our IoT payload through the environment." "Research opens doors in photonic quantum information processing, optical signal processing and microwave photonics. Researchers from the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have developed a new integrated photonics platform that can store light and electrically control its frequency (or color) in an integrated circuit. The platform draws inspiration from atomic systems and could have a wide range of applications including photonic quantum information processing, optical signal processing, and microwave photonics. “This is the first time that microwaves have been used to shift the frequency of light in a programmable manner on a chip,” said Mian Zhang, a former postdoctoral fellow in Applied Physics at SEAS, now CEO of Harvard-spawned startup HyperLight Corporation and first author of the paper. “Many quantum photonic and classical optics applications require shifting of optical frequencies, which has been difficult. We show that not only can we change the frequency in a controllable manner, but using this new ability we can also store and retrieve light on demand, which has not been possible before.” The research was published in Nature Photonics." "Pulse pattern suggests distant black hole must be spinning at least at 50 percent the speed of light. On Nov. 22, 2014, astronomers spotted a rare event in the night sky: A supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy, nearly 300 million light-years from Earth, ripping apart a passing star. The event, known as a tidal disruption flare, for the black hole’s massive tidal pull that tears a star apart, created a burst of X-ray activity near the center of the galaxy. Since then, a host of observatories have trained their sights on the event, in hopes of learning more about how black holes feed. Now researchers at MIT and elsewhere have pored through data from multiple telescopes’ observations of the event, and discovered a curiously intense, stable, and periodic pulse, or signal, of X-rays, across all datasets. "It automatically supplies meals to your pet at preset times, by providing the daily dose of cat kibble. Having a pet involves big responsibilities, first of all granting them food; unfortunately, a hectic lifestyle and imposed workhours do not go hand-in-hand with the needs of our four-legged friends, and surely anyone living on their own will have a hard time providing the pets meals on schedule. In order to solve a problem that is surely dear to any pet owner, and especially cat and dog owners, we have designed a device we called FelixMatic: it is a practical automatic dispenser of dry food for cats (or small dogs) equipped with a high-capacity container that can easily be opened from the top and a bowl to collect the kibble when it is supplied. We know we can already find automatic dispensers on the market, however, our example is unique because it can be programmed with 9 meals a day in order to supply very precise quantities of dry food. The project The way the dispenser works is more complex and complete than the average available product on the market, in fact, it does not only supply food but it also gives exact doses as decided by us; basically, at a preset time, a cochlea at the base of the container will turn, and drop a certain amount of kibble in the bowl, regulated by a dedicated weight sensor. "TLDR; I built a openwrt based custom firmware(autom8box), that packs router_functionality+domoticz_server+mqtt_broker which is all-in-one home-automation-gateway-solution running on a cheap $20 router that can be purchased off-the-shelf. Wifi based home automation products are cheaper compared to zigbee or z-wave products, but the downside is, wifi devices need internet connection to perform their function. Letting your home devices controlled by a bunch of cloud servers on the internet may not be the best idea. Internet connectivity for home devices should be optional - user should be incharge of deciding whether he/she wants to expose the home-devices to internet(may be for remote monitoring/controlling purpose), but in today's world, there are so called "alexa"/"google-home" compliant wifi devices who insist on internet else they wont work. Thanks to the opensource community(tasmota/espurna/etc) for helping us to jailbreak those wifi devices like sonoff/blitzwolf/teckin/etc.. but jailbreaking solves part of the problem, still the need for a home-automation gateway is a challenge and requires some advanced knowledge of setting-up wifi_access_point + mqtt_broker + automation_gateway_server(ex: domoticz/openHab). To address this gateway problem in a simplest and cheapest way, here is my attempt to convert an existing Off-the-shelf cheap wifi-router into a full-automation-gateway to support following functionalities."
