Hoje é o aniversário do nascimento de Dmitri Z. Garbuzov. Este inventor russo é um dos pioneiros da construção e utilização de diodos laser de onda continua à temperatura ambiente. Nas noticias da semana ficámos a saber que o gigante Qualcomm vai comprar a NXP por cerca de 47 mil milhões de dólares. Ficámos igualmente a saber que a sonda New Horizons, depois de ter percorrido cerca de 5.5 mil milhões de quilómetros, a última sequência de observação de Plutão chegou ao laboratório Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). A transmissão foi feita via a estação ligada à rede de Espaço Profundo da NASA e foi a última de mais de 50 gigabits de informação chegada de Plutão.

The downlink came via NASAs Deep Space Network station in Canberra, Australia. "A newly-developed form of transistor opens up a range of new electronic applications including wearable or implantable devices by drastically reducing the amount of power used. Devices based on this type of ultralow power transistor, developed by engineers at the University of Cambridge, could function for months or even years without a battery by 'scavenging' energy from their environment. Using a similar principle to a computer in sleep mode, the new transistor harnesses a tiny 'leakage' of electrical current, known as a near-off-state current, for its operations. This leak, like water dripping from a faulty tap, is a characteristic of all transistors, but this is the first time that it has been effectively captured and used functionally. The results, reported in the journal Science, open up new avenues for system design for the Internet of Things, in which most of the things we interact with every day are connected to the Internet." "Though theyre touted as ideal for electronics, two-dimensional materials like graphene may be too flat and hard to stretch to serve in flexible, wearable devices. Wavy borophene might be better, according to Rice University scientists. The Rice lab of theoretical physicist Boris Yakobson and experimental collaborators observed examples of naturally undulating, metallic borophene, an atom-thick layer of boron, and suggested that transferring it onto an elastic surface would preserve the materials stretchability along with its useful electronic properties. Highly conductive graphene has promise for flexible electronics, Yakobson said, but it is too stiff for devices that also need to stretch, compress or even twist. But borophene deposited on a silver substrate develops nanoscale corrugations. Weakly bound to the silver, it could be moved to a flexible surface for use." [...]

"It's not a complicated concept. It's not even terribly difficult to implement. It's just that I really don't understand why no one produces a product like this I have a heated shop and a heated garage. I also live in a fairly cold climate. I don't want to keep my garage or shop up to working temperature if I'm not actively working, but I do want to keep them at some reasonable temperature (above freezing) in the winter. I'd like to keep these areas at something like 50-55F when unoccupied, and then heating them to 68-70F when I'm working. I have been doing this by using standard mechanical thermostats and the process of sliding the setpoint back and forth is somewhat imprecise. If only someone made a dual setpoint thermostat I tried to find one on several occasions, but had no luck. Sure, they make smart thermostats that know when you're physically in the space, thermostats that connect to your WiFi, thermostats that learn your habits, but nothing as simple as a thermostat with two set points. "Battery profiler - my recent Arduino project - needed to store large amounts of data in some kind of flash memory controlled by Arduino. In the past, for this I used serial (SPI) chip W25Q80BV from Winbond that came in a breadboard-friendly PDIP-8 package. See this excellent tutorial on how this was done and reasons why this might be preferred from an SD card. The chip is no longer available, though, and while looking for alternatives I flirted for a time with parallel flash memory. Parallel memory? At first, this seems like a hopeless mismatch with Arduino. Parallel logic chips, after all, feature a lot of pins that need to be connected, well, in parallel. For example, the chip I used, SST39SF010A, has 32 (!) PDIP pins. Address pins alone count to 17! There is no way pin-poor Arduino, such as Pro Mini, could handle this kind of load. However, with a few additional chips I could successfully serialize the memory chip using as little as 6 Arduino pins plus I2C pins for communication." [...]

"An infinity mirror is part of an upcoming build of mine. There are lots of great descriptions of how to make these on the site already, and I checked a lot of them out - especially Ben Finio's excellent and encouraging Arduino-powered version. However, I was keen to leverage my novice skills with Fusion360 (the first solid 3D modeling program I've used) and 3D printed the enclosure for a flexible string (rather than a strip) of LEDs. I was very happy with the look of the final product - the diffusers made it easy on the eye, it had an interesting exposed look to the wiring, and I liked how the back of each LED case glowed. The first one I made was 6" in diameter and had 25 LEDs: this one is 9" in diameter and has 50 LEDs (the entirety of one string). If you've never made an infinity mirror because it looks too complex, but would like to and you have access to a 3D printer, try this one. It doesn't use much resin (and needs no support material) and no significant making/computing/programming/wiring skills are required. It also has a neat interactive twist: a handle on the front allows you to warp the mirror, creating neat wormhole effects." [...]
