Membership

Everyone is welcome to come to one of AltLab’s weekly work sessions in order to get to know us and learn more about the collective. Those who wish to attend the lab sessions and work with us on a frequent basis must become AltLab members.

AltLab members pay a 10€ monthly fee, in order to support the collective’s operating costs, which gives them full access to its resources. If you already know you want to join AltLab please (re)read the guidelines below and then fill out this registration form at Audiência Zero’s (AZ) website.

You don’t need to become a member of AltLab or AZ in order to participate in any of the public events or projects we organize (workshops, talks, exhibitions, etc.)

ALTLAB’s GUIDELINES

1. AltLab’s structure
1.1 AltLab is a collective dedicated to independent research and experimentation in alternative media.

1.2 AltLab is an integral part of the cultural organization Audiência Zero (AZ), just like LCD (Porto’s AZ hackerspace).

1.3 AZ’s representative in Lisbon will coordinate all the organization’s activities in this city, including AltLab.

1.4 AltLab’s activities will include: lab, weekly work sessions, mini-workshops, talks, exhibitions, debates, etc.

1.5 Larger scale events and activities (international workshops, major conferences, etc.) will be organized by AZ’s coordinators in collaboration with AltLab and LCD members.

1.6 AltLab and LCD will collaborate as often as possible through the organization and development of joint projects and events.

1.7 AltLab and LCD will share all their resources (which are the collective property of AZ).

1.8 AltLab’s organizing committee(s) will be comprised by all active members who wish to assume such responsibilities.

1.9 Only AltLab members can join its organizing committee(s) but they do not need to be AZ members.

1.10 Only AZ members can be part of its coordination team.

1.11 It’s not necessary to become a member of AZ to participate in any the organization’s events and projects. Nevertheless, AZ members will receive preferential treatment.

1.12 AltLab members will pay monthly fees in order to help support the collective’s operating costs (see point 2 for additional details).

1.13 AltLab’s objective is to become financially autonomous and self-reliant (through revenue generated by the organization of events and workshops, and also through the support of other public or private institutions).

2. Membership
2.1 AltLab members share the collective’s resources (such as tools and equipment), are given preferential treatment on its events, and have access to the collective’s workspace on the scheduled days and times. At the beginning this will happen only once or twice a week, but eventually AltLab will have its own space and provide full time access to all members.

2.2 As of April 2009, AltLab’s membership fee is 10€/month, due one month in advance and paid on the last day of each month (for example: May’s fee should be paid by April 30th). The member dues should be paid directly to AZ by wire transfer. AZ will be in charge of settling AltLab’s bills, acquire equipment, and keep AltLab’s accounting in order.

2.3 Everyone is welcome to come to one of AltLab’s weekly work sessions in order to get to know us and learn more about the collective. Those who wish to attend the lab sessions and work with us on a frequent basis must become AltLab members.

2.4 It is not necessary to become a member of AltLab or AZ in order to participate in any of the public events or projects we organize (workshops, talks, exhibitions, etc.)

3. Equipment and Tools
3.1 Part of AltLab’s funds will be used to acquire equipment and tools – this list will be compiled by its members. We will always first invest on the equipment and tools used by the largest number of members.

3.2 Materials (such as solder, electronics, etc.) used in each project must be purchased by its authors.

4. Projects and Exhibitions
4.1 We strongly encourage AltLab’s project leaders to enter their work-in-progress info on the community’s platform in order to facilitate collaboration among members. Such info should include: project title, description, names of authors and collaborators, project needs (tools, skills…), etc.

4.2 AltLab will periodically organize public exhibitions:
- All AltLab members can choose to participate or not in these exhibitions
- At the moment an exhibition is scheduled, project leaders must notify the collective if they wish to include their work on the show. If so, project leaders should also submit a form with the project’s title, description, names of authors, and project status.
